Harrowing stories of domestic violence have become all too common in sports, and mixed martial arts is no exception.

The most famous example is Christy Mack, who allegedly suffered a horrific beating at the hands of former UFC and Bellator fighter, Jon "War Machine" Koppenhaver.

In an interview with HBO's "Real Sports," Mack opened up about her relationship with War Machine and the assault that left her with a fractured orbital bone, broken nose, lacerated liver, and a pair of missing teeth.

"I don't remember the first hit, I just remember him charging at me," Mack said, according to Fox Sports' Damon Martin. "I could taste the blood in my mouth. I was going in and out of consciousness. At one point, he had kicked me so hard in my side that it ruptured my liver. I couldn't breathe. I couldn't catch my breath and I started convulsing. At that point, I felt like I was going to die."

According to Mack, War Machine's pattern of violence started four months into their relationship, and things got especially dicey whenever the former "Ultimate Fighter" contestant was abusing steroids.

"I would see him shoot steroids into his arm really frequently," Mack said. "I could tell the difference when he was using steroids and when he wasn't."

War Machine, who denies his ex-girlfriend's version of the events, faces 32 charges, including attempted murder, for his alleged assault of Mack and her friend, Corey Thomas.
