Maia closes out UFC 190 prelims with slick submission victory over Magny
Demian Maia def. Neil Magny via second-round submission (rear-naked choke)
Demian Maia is venomous on the floor.
The BJJ wizard ran game on a woefully overmatched Neil Magny in the final fight of the UFC 190 prelims, cruising to an impressive second-round submission victory.
Both rounds played out exactly the same, with Maia taking no damage, immediately getting a takedown, working for submissions, and landing ground-and-pound while Magny desperately tried to survive.
Midway through the second stanza, Maia snatched a full body triangle while glued to Magny's back, eventually cinching a fight-ending rear-naked choke.
Patrick Cummins def. Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante via third-round TKO
Like a true barista, Pat Cummins embraces the grind.
Despite looking like the Elephant Man after he tried shaving with a razor-tipped weed whipper, Cummins used his superior wrestling and stifling top control to completely dominate Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante en route to a third-round TKO victory.
Feijao was able to rip up Cummins' face with short strikes, but couldn't keep the powerful American wrestler from repeatedly dragging him down to the canvas, eventually succumbing to a violent volley of elbows 45 seconds into the third round.
Warlley Alves def. Nordine Taleb via second-round submission (guillotine choke)
Warlley Alves' star continues to rise in the UFC's welterweight division.
In what was expected to be the stiffest test of his young career, the 24-year-old Brazilian completely dominated Nordine Taleb, landing the harder, crisper shots on the feet, while controlling most of the grappling exchanges during the nine-minute affair.
Desperate to turn the tide late in the second stanza, Taleb dove in for an ill-advised double leg, foolishly exposing his neck to the finish-hungry Alves. From there, it was academic, as Alves quickly snaked in the fight-ending guillotine choke, eliciting a tap at 4:11 of the round.
Iuri Alcantara def. Leandro Issa via unanimous decision
Iuri Alcantara-Leandro Issa was a tale of two fights.
Whenever the bout stayed on the feet, Alcantara completely wrecked Issa, wobbling his countryman with big shots and massive combinations. Issa, a grappling wizard, ran the table on Alcantara almost every time the fight hit the floor, though that only happened during the opening stanza.
The only exception to that was when a softened, bloodied Issa fell victim to some heavy ground-and-pound in the third frame, as Alcantara completely blitzed him over the final five minutes to seal a dominant unanimous-decision victory.
This is the best version of Iuri Alcantara we've seen. Improved defensive wrestling, smooth pace, even more crushing power. #UFC190
