Aldo watched a soccer game instead of UFC 189
Jose Aldo doesn't make it much of a secret that he didn't watch Conor McGregor take on Chad Mendes at UFC 189.
The featherweight champion suffered a controversial rib injury leading up the the hotly anticipated event and was replaced by Mendes against the impossibly brash Irishman. McGregor proceeded to weather an early storm before coming back to knock Mendes out in the second round.
It was a thrilling come-from-behind victory that crowned an interim featherweight champion ... and ... well, Aldo watched a soccer game instead.
"I don't care about him, and I don't care about what he's doing," Aldo told Steven Marrocco and John Morgan of MMAjunkie.com of McGregor as he prepares to unify the titles at UFC 194 in December.
Turns out, Aldo doesn't think watching McGregor-Mendes was necessary in learning about his upcoming opponent, and the deluge of calls he received following the bout provided more than enough insight.
"A lot of friends called me and told me, 'You're going to kill this guy for sure,'" Aldo concluded.
