Sonnen to grapple with Barnett at Metamoris
Chael Sonnen is set to square off against Josh Barnett in a submission grappling bout at a Metamoris event later this year, Sonnen announced on Submission Radio.
"I have a match coming up at the very end of October, might even be Nov. 1, I have to look," Sonnen said, according to MMAFighting.com's Dave Meltzer. "His name is Josh Barnett."
Scheduled to sling heavy leather with Roy Nelson at UFC Fight Night 75 on Sept. 26, Barnett is 2-0 in Metamoris, submitting high-level BJJ black belts Dean Lister and Ryron Gracie.
Not exactly a submission artist during his UFC tenure, Sonnen battled Renato "Babalu" Sobral to a draw at Metamoris VI.
"I'll even give you gentleman a prediction ... Sonnen wins," the brash "American Gangster" said. "I'm going to take his fat ass down and he will never get up. And let him know I said that."
After multiple failed drug tests, Sonnen retired from active MMA competition in 2014, and now serves as a color commentator for the World Series of Fighting.
