Roach: GSP planning 6-week training camp to test desire to return
The quiet murmurs regarding a potential return to the Octagon for Georges St-Pierre are slowly becoming a dull roar.
In a recent interview with Fight Hub, St-Pierre's boxing coach Freddie Roach said the former UFC welterweight champion was planning a six week training camp to test whether he still has the desire to return to the cage.
"He's gonna train for a fight," Roach said, according to MMAFighting.com's Marc Raimondi. "He's gonna have a six-week training camp. And at the end of the six weeks, if he feels like he's ready to fight and he's hungry for it like he always has been, he's gonna do it. He's gonna fight one more time."
St-Pierre took a sabbatical from the sport following a controversial split decision victory over Johny Hendricks at UFC 167 in 2013, but strategically never used the word "retirement" while discussing his time away from MMA. According to Roach, the pound-for-pound great could walk away for good if he's not feeling it following the six-week test.
"If he doesn't feel it and he feels like it's just not there, he's gonna let it go and he's gonna retire," Roach said. "I think it's a really good idea. I think it's really, really smart to do that, to see where he's at in his mind."
