Jon Jones: 'They let Vitor fight on steroids against me'
For Jon Jones, being one of the most important fighters in the UFC doesn't mean the company always has your best interests in mind.
Armed with evidence alleging that one infamous challenger to his throne was juicing when they stepped in the cage, Jones went on the attack against both Vitor Belfort, and the UFC, during yesterday's interview with Ariel Helwani of MMAFighting.com.
"They let Vitor fight on steroids against me," Jones told Helwani, according to MMAFighting.com's Marc Raimondi.
Belfort was defeated by Jones in a light heavyweight championship bout at UFC 152 back in 2012. A recent Deadspin report revealed that Belfort's blood tests were accidentally sent out to a number of groups in the MMA community prior to the fight, and that those tests showed the challenger's testosterone levels to be higher than permitted.
Even without the paperwork, Jones claims that he knew something was up.
"I remember at the weigh-ins, I looked at his abs and I'm like, 'Dude, I'm like several years younger than you, and you look way tighter than me,'" Jones said. "And I knew I trained pretty hard for that camp. Everybody has always speculated Vitor for being on steroids. But to know they put me in there with him knowing he was on them, it's really a slap in the face."
The relationship between Jones and the UFC was already strained when they publicly roasted him for declining to fight a replacement opponent at UFC 151, which became the first event cancelled outright in the history of the organization.
This latest jab at the organization could add yet another layer of intrigue to Jones' aim of return to the Octagon next year.
"I haven't brought it up to them yet," Jones said. "But the fans know. It all gets back to what I was saying about power of the UFC, and this athletic commission. Eventually something needs to be done about it.
"I will bring it up eventually. I'm just interested to hear their explanation."
