Report: Alistair Overeem plans to test free agency after UFC contract runs out
With an impressive victory over Junior dos Santos at UFC on FOX 17, Alistair Overeem is looking to get more than just a title shot. He's looking for a massive payday.
According to UFC Tonight's Ariel Helwani, Overeem plans on fighting out the last bout on his current UFC contract before dipping his toes into the potentially lucrative waters of free agency.
Although signing Overeem would be a boon for Bellator or the newly-formed Rizin promotion, UFC contracts generally contain a provision that allows the company to match any potential offers a fighter receives.
A former Dream and Strikeforce heavyweight champion, Overeem has experienced an up-and-down run during his UFC tenure, as his venomous finishing ability is often betrayed by his shaky chin.
Since joining the promotion in 2011, Overeem has posted a 4-3 record, counting Brock Lesnar, Frank Mir, and Roy Nelson among his high-profile scalps.
