Report: Atlanta speedway NASCAR employee tests positive for COVID-19

A NASCAR employee who was working at Atlanta Motor Speedway earlier this month has tested positive for the coronavirus, multiple teams confirmed to Dustin Long of NBC Sports.

In a note to teams that Long obtained, NASCAR confirmed the unidentified employee was working at "the abbreviated Atlanta event" during the weekend of March 14-15. The race was eventually postponed.

It's unclear what position the employee held.

"The individual is in the process of receiving medical care and all employees potentially exposed have been directed to self-quarantine for the two weeks following that event through March 27 and will be monitored closely for symptoms," NASCAR's note read.

In addition to notifying its racing teams and race track officials in Atlanta, NASCAR is sanitizing all equipment used at that track earlier this month, according to Long.

After initially announcing plans to continue racing but without fans, NASCAR opted to postpone all of its events through May 3 due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

This is the first instance of anyone in the NASCAR community testing positive for the virus, Long adds.
