Legge to become 1st woman to compete in Cup Series since 2018

Katherine Legge will become the first female driver to race in NASCAR's Cup Series since 2018, Live Fast Motorsports announced Monday.

Legge will compete in the No. 78 Chevrolet during Sunday's Shriners Children's 500 at Phoenix Raceway.

"Entering the NASCAR Cup Series is a dream come true," Legge said, according to The Associated Press.

"Racing stock cars has been an incredibly fun and new challenge that's given me a renewed sense of vigor for this sport. As always, I'm grateful for the opportunity to do what I love and am inspired by all of the effort, preparation and behind-the-scenes work it takes to get here."

The last female driver to race in a Cup Series event was Danica Patrick when she participated in the 2018 Daytona 500.

Legge has appeared in five Xfinity Series races, with her last drive in the series taking place at Road America in 2023.

She also races part-time in the IMSA SportsCar Championship, as well as the ARCA Menards Series.

The 44-year-old British driver owns the record for fastest qualifying time by a woman at the Indianapolis 500 and became the first woman to win a North American open-wheel race in 2005.
