Report: M&M's / Mars to sponsor Edwards if signed by Joe Gibbs Racing

With his contract at Roush Fenway Racing coming to the end this season, Carl Edwards appears to be one of the more popular free agents in the garage.

While it hasn’t been confirmed, the addition of Trevor Bayne to Roush, and the news of Greg Biffle and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. staying with the team leads many to believe that Edwards is on the outs after this year’s finale at Homestead. So where is Edwards going?

Roger Penske already stated he had ‘no interest’ in signing another driver to their 2-car operation. Hendrick Motorsports’ stable is filled through 2015 and Edwards already declined an offer from Richard Childress Racing.

That leaves one powerhouse team: Joe Gibbs Racing.

Motorsports.com reporter Lee Spencer is reporting that sponsor changes are in motion to accommodate Edwards in next season at Gibbs. Because of clauses in his Roush contract, Edwards won’t be able to bring his sponsors (Aflac, Subway, Fastenal) with him to another team, so it’s up to him and his potential new team to figure out how to make it work.

Spencer reports that the rumor around the garage is that Edwards’ primary sponsor at Joe Gibbs Racing will be the M&Ms / Mars brand, who currently sponsor Kyle Busch.

That’s not saying that Busch is going anywhere. According to the report, Monster will bring their sponsorship up from the Nationwide Series (where they sponsor the No. 54 Toyota, mainly driven by Busch) to the Sprint Cup level to sponsor the No. 18 car full-time.
