Austin Dillon angry with Denny Hamlin for late-race contact at New Hampshire
It was all smiles for Denny Hamlin after the Lakes Region 200 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Saturday. Hamlin led 146 laps and held off Austin Dillon in the last few laps for the victory.
But, it was quite the opposite emotion for Dillon.
On Lap 179, Hamlin pushed into the left fender of Dillon's No. 33 car, causing Dillon to get loose and lose the lead.
"He never wanted to race side-by-side for a lap with anybody." a frustrated Dillon told NBC Sports after the race. "He wrecked his teammate at the beginning of the race (too). It's all good. We've got plenty of races left. It'll happen again to him."
The wreck Dillon mentioned was on Lap 23, when Hamlin slid up into his teammate Kyle Busch. Hamlin spun out and caused Busch to slam on the breaks to avoid hitting him. They both restarted at the back of the pack.
This isn't the first time Hamlin and Dillon have had issues. Two years ago, the two exchanged not-so-nice words after a race at Texas Motor Speedway.
"I've reworked a relationship with Denny," Dillon said in the media center. "He called me a spoiled rich kid in Texas two years ago and I ate it, you know what I mean? He said just the last name and I said, 'My last name is Dillon, not Childress, but he is my grandfather.' I always act with class. Everybody in the media knows that. And I've worked my way here just like anybody else. But Denny, acting like that, what does he want me to call him, you know? I don't do that."
Hamlin was asked during his press conference what Dillon should call him and he had only two words to say.
"A winner."
