Southgate extends England contract until 2022, names uncapped trio in squad
England manager Gareth Southgate has been handed a new four-year contract running until after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the Football Association confirmed.
The news was announced Thursday as the former defender, who led the Three Lions to a first World Cup semi-final in 28 years this summer, held a press conference to announce his latest squad for the upcoming Nations League clashes with Croatia and Spain.
"I am delighted to have the opportunity to lead the national team through the next two major tournaments," Southgate said. "The job remains an incredible privilege and a true honor.
"Experiencing at firsthand how the nation united behind the team this summer was something special and it will be great to see how far this young squad can go in the years to come."
Shortly after the confirmation of his new deal, the 48-year-old announced his latest 25-man squad, and the headline inclusion was Borussia Dortmund's nascent star Jadon Sancho.
The former Manchester City academy prodigy has been making headlines in Germany for his performances from the substitutes' bench. The 18-year-old has five Bundesliga assists this season for Dortmund, the highest number of any player in Europe's top five leagues.
Busy day for Gareth Southgate! 😅
