Pau Gasol: Spurs are 'an interesting option' in free agency
Impending free agent Pau Gasol has given a little more credence to the notion that he may join the San Antonio Spurs when given his choice of destinations this summer.
Pau's brother, Marc Gasol, suggested earlier this week that Pau would end up in San Antonio, and Pau told Spanish newspaper Marca in an interview published Friday that the Spurs would be "an interesting option for me."
Pau, who can (and almost certainly will) opt out of his contract with the Chicago Bulls, is coming off an age-35 season in which he averaged 16.5 points, 11 rebounds, 4.1 assists (the second-highest mark of his career), and two blocks. Despite his age, his profile as a skilled, slick-passing big man who can stretch the floor makes him a perfect theoretical fit with the Spurs.
It's unclear what kind of effort, if any, the Bulls will make to retain Pau. They reportedly shopped him during the season, but general manager Gar Forman insisted the team's plan is to re-sign him - though he reportedly softened that stance as the team's playoff hopes faded down the stretch.
