Report: Pat Riley used to fine players for helping opponents up
As a player, a coach, and now an executive entrenched in the NBA for nearly 50 years, Pat Riley has earned a reputation as one of the most competitive, no-nonsense names in the league's history.
And now there's another story to add to the lore.
Hidden within an in-depth feature on the friendship between LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, ESPN's Pablo Torre writes that during his years as head coach of the Miami Heat, Riley reportedly fined his players $1,500 if they ever helped an opponent up off the floor.
Riley, who has served as Heat president since 1995, was a head coach for the franchise on two separate occasions, from 1995 through 2003, and again from 2005-2008.
While the revelation is somewhat concerning, it also shouldn't surprise anyone who has followed the career of a man often referred to as the NBA's 'Godfather.'
