Melo says Knicks didn't consult him about coaching hire

The New York Knicks are expected to formally introduce Jeff Hornacek as their next head coach next week, and though their star player appears to approve of the choice, he apparently wasn't consulted about it ahead of time.

As the Knicks hunted for a coach after the regular season, Carmelo Anthony expressed his desire to play a part in the process.

"I would want to be involved," he said. "I hope I'm involved. Just to have my opinion heard."

Well, so much for that. Anthony was a spectator at New York Mets batting practice Friday night, and was asked by reporters if he'd had any input before Hornacek was selected to take over on the bench.

"Nah," he said, according to Newsday's Anthony Rieber. "I let them deal with that one."

Despite being shut out of the coaching discussion, Anthony believes that when free agency kicks off July 1, the team will indeed seek his help - be it a word of advice or a recruitment pitch to a prospective Knick.

"Pretty sure," he said. "When that time comes, we'll do the work."
