Klay jokes Warriors are better than Showtime Lakers
With how much shade that NBA old-timers have shoveled on the Golden State Warriors, it's about time someone fired back.
Riding on the high of a 33-point shellacking of the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 2 Sunday night, Klay Thompson made a joke at his old man's expense.
"We're better than the Showtime Lakers," Thompson said with a smile after Draymond Green posited the question.
Headed up by Magic Johnson, the Showtime Lakers wowed crowds with their up-tempo style, flashy passing, and an inimitable flamboyant flare. They drew fans in droves and created a Hollywood-esque atmosphere - all of which applies to today's Warriors.
Magic would eventually guide the Lakers to five championships, and Golden State is just working on their second, so the Warriors still have some ways to go before reaching their level. But those Lakers also never never matched the peak of winning 73 games.
Mychal Thompson, Klay's father, was a pivotal piece of those Lakers teams that won championships in 1987 and 1988. Klay will probably hear about his clever quip at the next Thompson family dinner.
