Curry won't play in Rio Olympics
Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry announced Monday that he will not participate in this summer's Olympic Games in Rio with USA Basketball.
"After a great deal of internal thought and several discussions with my family, the Warriors, and my representatives, I've elected to withdraw my name from the list of eligible players on Team USA's preliminary roster for the 2016 Summer Games in Brazil," he said in a statement.
Curry is still feeling the effects of a right MCL sprain he picked up in the first round of the postseason against the Houston Rockets, and with the Warriors still playing - and sitting two wins away from a second consecutive NBA championship - he could probably use a rest this summer. Between regular season and playoffs, he's played 193 games over the past two years. He's also nursing ankle and elbow injuries sustained during this current playoff run.
"My previous experiences with USA Basketball have been incredibly rewarding, educational, and enjoyable, which made this an extremely difficult decision for me and my family," said Curry, who won a gold medal with Team USA at the FIBA World Cup in 2014. "It's an incredible honor to represent your country and wear 'USA' on your chest, but my primary basketball-related objective this summer needs to focus on my body and getting ready for the 2016-17 NBA season."
Curry's teammates Klay Thompson and Andre Iguodala may also opt out due to concerns about the Zika virus in Brazil, according to Marcus Thompson of the Bay Area News Group.
Team USA has already lost a good deal of star power due to injuries, with Anthony Davis, Chris Paul, and Blake Griffin all being effectively forced to withdraw.
