'Fat boy at heart' Wade: I felt like I was 28 this season
Much has been made about Dwyane Wade's advancing age the past couple of seasons, mainly because there are 13 deep-run NBA seasons on his odometer. But at age 34, the Miami Heat superstar says his body hasn't told him it's time yet.
"I'm not there yet," Wade said to Morty Ain in ESPN The Magazine's Body Issue. "I've got some good years left."
Wade is one of the latest sports celebrities to bare (mostly) all in the annual edition, as well as offering some candid thoughts on his own body.
"I love to eat," Wade said. "I'm a fat boy at heart, man, when I'm eating. To me that's kind of like my happy place: a great burger, fries and a soda. It's easy for me to pack pounds on, but it's easy for me to get them off at the same time."
Wade did concede that the injuries he dealt with between 2012 and last season were hard on him and contributed to a belief he was in decline.
"I felt like my body was betraying me out of nowhere," he said. "There was so much pain in my knee. Anytime I made a move, and I mean like a step or a walk, any move was painful. I remember just thinking at one point, 'What have I done to deserve this?'"
The good news is how Wade felt last season, referring specifically to his dunk on the Charlotte Hornets' Marvin Williams in the first round of the playoffs.
"I felt like I was about 28 this year," he said. "I went coast-to-coast and dunked on a guy. I don't really dunk on other guys ... and I was like, 'Oh, that's what I'm talking about! You still got it when you need it!'"
