Izzo: Deyonta Davis' draft slide 'a cautionary tale' for freshmen

Deyonta Davis found out the hard way that there's nothing wrong with staying in school.

The former Michigan State forward was thought to possess enough talent to sneak comfortably into the first round of the NBA draft, despite spending just one underwhelming season in East Lansing. That turned out not to be the case, however, and Davis was forced to spend the entire first round in a state of dejection.

"This is a cautionary tale for a lot of these freshmen that are leaving early," his college coach, Tom Izzo, told ESPN's Andy Katz, according to Kyle Austin of MLive.

Davis averaged 7.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game as a freshman for the Spartans. He was finally drafted with the first pick of the second round, 31st overall, by the Boston Celtics, who plan to trade him to the Memphis Grizzlies.
