Report: Mavericks reach agreement with Barnes on 4-year, $94M deal
The Dallas Mavericks have agreed to a four-year, $94-million deal with Harrison Barnes, according to ESPN's Marc Stein.
Barnes was restricted, but the Golden State Warriors must have rescinded their offer sheet once they landed Kevin Durant. That made Barnes an unrestricted free agent for the Mavericks to sign without fear of the Warriors matching.
The much-maligned Barnes is coming off a horrendous performance in The Finals, but that overshadows his true abilities. It remains to be seen if Barnes has more depth in his game that he wasn't allowed to exhibit when trapped behind established stars in Golden State, but the potential might be there.
Nevertheless, the 24-year-old should at least be a strong role player. Barnes averaged 11.7 points and 4.9 rebounds per game last season while shooting 38.3 percent from deep.
He can knock down catch-and-shoot triples and he has the positional versatility to guard both wings and power forwards. That should give Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle the ability to play bigger, or to downsize, with Barnes as their fulcrum.
Barnes takes up the empty spot left behind by Chandler Parsons, who left Dallas for Memphis this summer.
The Mavericks also acquired former Warriors center Andrew Bogut in a separate trade on Monday as they continue to benefit from the fallout of Durant's decision.
