Report: NBA's 2017-18 cap projection falls by $6M
Teams may need to be more frugal than they anticipated next offseason.
The newest salary-cap projection for the 2017-18 season has fallen by $6 million, from $108 million to $102 million, ESPN's Brian Windhorst reports. In other words, the cap is expected to increase by less than $8 million after jumping up by more than $24 million in 2016-17.
The new projection could be devastating for teams like the Golden State Warriors, who will likely have difficulty re-signing all of their free agents, a group that includes Steph Curry, Andre Iguodala, Shaun Livingston, and possibly Kevin Durant.
In addition to a lower cap, the league is expected to owe its players a shortfall payment of $200 million next summer, after paying them $131 million this year.
