Hawks' Schroder won't play for Germany this summer
Germany didn't qualify for the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro next month, but national team duty still beckoned Atlanta Hawks point guard Dennis Schroder ahead of qualification for next summer's EuroBasket 2017.
Schroder will take a pass on that, the German Basketball Federation announced Wednesday.
"All this does not change my commitment to the German national team. The 2020 Olympics remains the focus," the 22-year-old said in a statement in German on Twitter, as translated by The Atlanta Journal Constitution's Chris Vivlamore.
Schroder is the new star of Germany's national program, with Dirk Nowitzki announcing last year that he was retiring from international competition. He's also been handed the keys to the Hawks' offense following the trade of Jeff Teague to the Indiana Pacers.
