Celtics' Thomas: Numbers show I'm one of NBA's best point guards
After coming off a year in which he led the Boston Celtics in scoring and was named to his first All-Star team, Isaiah Thomas is confident about where he ranks among the game's elite.
"All I'm going to say is men lie, women lie, numbers don't," Thomas told Amanda Pflugrad of celtics.com. "My numbers stack up against all those other guys, those other top superstar guys, I guess you'd say. At the end of the day, I'm just going to continue to work and continue to show that I'm just as good as any other point guard in the NBA."
While Thomas put up big numbers during Boston's impressive 2015-16 campaign, the Celtics also relied heavily on his offense last season, which likely inflated both his points and assists per game figures.
Thomas still needs to add to his resume if he hopes to be mentioned in the same breath as Steph Curry and Russell Westbrook. Both of the aforementioned players have won scoring titles, while Thomas' 22.2 points-per-game average in 2015-16 - which put him 11th in the league - was his highest as a pro. Curry and Westbrook also ranked in the top 10 in assists last season, while Thomas finished tied for 14th.
His biggest weakness remains on the defensive end, where his lack of size often causes him to struggle against bigger guards. If he can develop into a respectable defender and continue to put up numbers with Al Horford in the lineup, he'll make a strong case for his place among the league's best.
