Report: Zhou Qi lacks NBA out clause, won't join Rockets this summer

Houston Rockets fans will have to be patient.

Chinese prospect Zhou Qi, who the Rockets selected 43rd overall this summer, does not have an NBA out clause in his current contract with the Chinese Basketball Association, sources tell ESPN's Calvin Watkins.

Instead, the 20-year-old Qi will suit up for the Xinjiang Flying Tigers next season where he will continue his development. The first order of business should be for the rail-thin Qi to add some bulk to his 7-foot-3 frame.

There's potential for Qi to develop into a stretch-five who can protect the basket. Qi is quick and possesses natural shot-blocking ability owing to his massive wingspan. He pairs that defensive ability with a smooth jump shot that extends out beyond the 3-point line.

But until he bulks up and builds some strength, Qi would be hard-pressed to contribute at the NBA level.
