Mo Williams to retire from NBA, agent says
Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Mo Williams apparently doesn't have one more season left in him after all.
Less than one week after announcing on Twitter that he was going to play out his final year with the organization before calling it a career, Williams' agent has informed general manager David Griffin that the 33-year-old will retire from the NBA, according to the Akron Beacon Journal's Jason Lloyd.
"It was in debate what Mo was going to do; he vacillated a little bit," Griffin said. "So we were planning for this eventuality. We're comfortable with where we are at the point guard position."
Williams was out of action for a huge chunk of games in the middle of last season after experiencing swelling in his left knee, which may have played a part in his decision to call it quits.
He picked up his player option worth approximately $2.2 million back in June after averaging 8.2 points and 2.4 assists on 43.7 percent shooting.
He recently told ESPN's Dave McMenamin that the opportunity to compete for a second straight NBA championship, and be a quality backup option behind starting guard Kyrie Irving, convinced him to return at first.
Drafted 47th overall in the 2003 draft, Williams has suited up for the Cavaliers, Utah Jazz, Milwaukee Bucks, Los Angeles Clippers, Portland Trail Blazers, Charlotte Hornets, and Minnesota Timberwolves across 13 seasons in the league.
He averaged 13.2 points, 4.9 assists, and 2.8 rebounds over 818 career appearances, including 9.8 points and 2.6 assists in 62 playoff games. Williams was named to his only All-Star Game in 2009 during his first stint in Cleveland, where he finished second on the team in scoring behind LeBron James, averaging 17.8 points.
