Hawks' Millsap undecided on whether to opt out of contract
With the NBA's salary cap reaching record heights, several of the league's top players have elected to opt out of their contracts with the hope of landing more lucrative deals.
All-Star power forward Paul Millsap of the Atlanta Hawks is unsure of whether he's going to go down that route, though.
"I haven't decided anything, no," he told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Chris Vivlamore on Tuesday.
The 31-year-old is set to make just over $20 million during the 2016-17 campaign, with a player option worth $21.4 million the following year. Rather than commit to a decision now, Millsap said he'll wait and see how the season unfolds, then go from there.
"I can’t predict what is going to happen. For me, it’s focus on basketball," he added. "Get through this year, try to get a championship for this team first of all. We’ll deal with all that during the summer time when we have all our options on the table."
Toronto Raptors point guard Kyle Lowry is taking the opposite approach, as he'll reportedly opt out of his deal next summer, although his intentions apparently are to remain in the 6ix.
Millsap, entering his fourth season in Atlanta, averaged 17.1 points, nine rebounds, 3.3 assists, 1.8 steals, and 1.7 blocks in 81 appearances last season for the 48-34 Hawks, who were swept out of the second round of the playoffs by the Cleveland Cavaliers.
