Magic's Vucevic unhappy with coming off bench
Drastic times call for drastic measures, and with the Orlando Magic's league-worst offense showing no signs of improvement, it was time for head coach Frank Vogel to start making adjustments to his lineup.
A casualty of those changes was center Nikola Vucevic, who was moved to the second unit on Sunday night against the Milwaukee Bucks in favor of Bismack Biyombo, with guard Elfrid Payton also getting bumped for D.J. Augustin.
Suffice it to say, the 26-year-old 7-footer wasn't pleased with Vogel's roster shuffling.
"I spoke to Frank about it last night, and obviously I wasn't happy with the decision they made," said Vucevic, according to Orlando Pinstriped Post's Zach Oliver. "I didn't think that there was a reason for me to go to the bench, but it's coaches decision. All I can do is control what I can control, which is when I'm on the court, play to the best of my ability and help the team win. Stay professional and whatever is going on, I'll keep giving my best and give them my full effort."
There was no immediate payoff for Orlando at the Amway Center, as the team lost its fourth straight contest, 104-96. Vucevic was one of the Magic's few bright spots, though, finishing with a double-double of 17 points and 16 rebounds in 29 minutes - three less than Biyombo, who only contributed four points and four boards on 1-of-5 shooting.
"We're 30th in offense; I want to explore some new combinations in the same nine guys being in the rotation," Vogel said. "Try to get a different feel, a different flow. Try to take the first quarter and put the ball in Evan Fournier's hands more with a spot up 3-point shooting point guard out there with him. I thought that part was effective. Utilize Biz and Serge (Ibaka) together, with Biz as a roller and Serge as a spot up guy where he’s been effective and to get Elfrid and Vooch (Vucevic) a different look coming off the second unit, going against second unit guys."
Vucevic is only shooting 43.9 percent on the year (down from 51 percent in 2015-16), but had been showing signs of life in the two games prior to Sunday's, connecting on 18 of his 31 attempts (58 percent) against the Phoenix Suns and Washington Wizards.
