Report: Grizzlies expected to sign Toney Douglas if granted injury exception
The Memphis Grizzlies are preparing to fill a 16th roster spot in anticipation of being granted an injury exception by the NBA office.
Looking to fill the void created by Mike Conley's projected six-week-long injury absence, the Grizzlies hosted workouts for point guards Toney Douglas, Kendall Marshall, and Will Bynum this week, with Douglas emerging as the front-runner to be signed once the exception is approved, Michael Wallace of Grizzlies.com reports.
Teams become eligible for the injury exception when four of their rostered players miss at least three consecutive games. The Grizzlies have been playing without any of Brandan Wright, Chandler Parsons, and James Ennis due to injuries for the past two-odd weeks, while Zach Randolph has been away from the team for the past five games following the death of his mother.
Conley will miss his third straight game Saturday, and Vince Carter may too.
Douglas, who was one of the Cleveland Cavaliers' last training-camp cuts this past offseason, averaged 8.7 points, 2.6 assists, and 1.1 steals, while shooting a career-high 39.9 percent from 3-point range in 61 games with the New Orleans Pelicans last season.
