Adam Silver hints at future midseason tournaments in Mexico

The future of the National Basketball Association in Mexico has the potential to go beyond just a few special appearances during the regular season, which is how current commissioner Adam Silver sees things unfolding in the future.

"It ultimately may make sense to bring more teams, rather than just have two teams play each other for a single event, to maybe bring multiple teams and have some sort of midseason tournament, some sort of round-robin tournament," Silver said Saturday.

"That's one of the things that he's (deputy commissioner Mark Tatum) been looking at, together with his colleagues, to see whether there's something new and different we should be doing with our format given the long regular season."

The league is coming off a successful two-game stint in Mexico City, culminating Saturday night when the Phoenix Suns and San Antonio Spurs played in front of a record sellout crowd of 20,532 fans. Phoenix fell to the Dallas Mavericks on Jan. 12 at the Mexico City Arena.

This isn't the first time Silver has entertained the idea of a midseason tournament, as it was back in 2014 when the Board of Governors and competition committee discussed bringing one to Las Vegas stemming from the popularity of Summer League.
