Former NC State, NBA player Charles Shackleford dies at 50

Former NC State forward Charles Shackleford was found dead in his hometown of Kiniston, North Carolina on Friday, Kiniston Police Department spokesman Woody Spencer confirmed to Chris Cioffi of The News & Observer.

He was 50 years old.

Spencer said that the cause of death has yet to be determined, and that police are involved in an ongoing investigation.

From 1985-88, Shackleford was a noted presence on the court for the Wolfpack, appearing in 94 games over a three-year span and averaging 13.7 points and 7.8 rebounds.

Following his selection by the New Jersey Nets with the 32nd overall pick in the 1988 NBA Draft, Shackleford went on to have a six-year NBA career with stops with the Nets, Philadelphia 76ers, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Charlotte Hornets.

Shackleford also spent a number of seasons playing overseas in Italy, Turkey, and Greece.
