Myers says Durant messed with him over announcement to come to Warriors
Golden State Warriors general manager Bob Myers tends to approach life as cautiously optimistic. He said Wednesday that during last summer's Kevin Durant sweepstakes he truly didn't believe Durant would sign with the Dubs, and prepared himself for that eventuality.
Even when Durant called him on his decision day, July 4, Myers thought things were going in a much different direction.
"He said, 'just want to tell you that I appreciate you guys coming out and meeting with me,' and then he used the word 'but,'" Myers told ESPN Radio's Russillo & Kanell. "And I thought, oh man, that's too bad.
"But then he said, but I've decided to come (to) want to be a Warrior. It was a pretty big pivot of emotion because I thought he was calling for the letdown. And then I asked him later, 'what were you doing, you totally fumbled that when you told me you were coming'. And he said, 'I was thinking about messing you, but then I thought forget it.'"
Myers, who's been the Warriors' GM since 2012, called the Durant coup one of the biggest moments of his career.
"Pretty overwhelming emotion," he said. "As far as a work moment, that and winning the championship, those are big moments."
