Popovich: Spurs not focused on catching Durant-less Warriors

USA Today Sports

The Golden State Warriors appear vulnerable with the loss of four-time scoring champion Kevin Durant to an injury, creating an opening for the San Antonio Spurs to climb the standings and take over the Western Conference's No. 1 seed.

That doesn't appear to be the team's focus, though, as all head coach Gregg Popovich wants from his Spurs is to continue what they're doing, and let the chips fall as they may.

"We don't try to catch anybody. We just play. We always have," Popovich told reporters prior to San Antonio's home game against the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday, according to the San Antonio Express-News' Tom Orsborn.

"Where we end up, we end up."

San Antonio (45-13) has 24 games remaining on its schedule, and trails Golden State (50-10) by four games in the race for the top seed. The powerhouses will square off two more times, as well, with their next meeting coming March 11 at the AT&T Center.

Durant won't be in uniform for either of those meetings, as he'll be re-evaluated in four weeks, with no timetable set for his return.

"Something like that is always awful. Nobody wishes that on anybody," Popovich said of Durant. "Anybody (injured) you hate to see it. But somebody that is that important, it's just really unfortunate."
