Memphis Grizzlies sign undrafted Kobi Simmons
Despite going undrafted Thursday night, Arizona point guard Kobi Simmons didn't have to wait long to find himself an NBA opportunity.
The 19-year-old Pac-12 product signed with the Memphis Grizzlies, a source told The Vertical's Adrian Wojnarowski.
Simmons' stats from his lone year with the Wildcats don't jump off the page. He finished with an average of 8.8 points on 38.7 percent shooting from the field and 77.5 percent from the free-throw line in 23.5 minutes per game. Still, Arizona finished with a 16-2 conference record and 32-5 overall. At the very least, Simmons has been around a winning culture.
Measured at 6-foot-5, but with a 6-foot-6 wingspan, Simmons could develop into either backcourt position, depending on the personnel around him. For now, Simmons will earn his keep as a combo guard off the bench, where he can continue to work on his playmaking and outside shooting.
As an undrafted free agent, Memphis has the luxury of taking their time with Simmons' development; his limited assist output and 32.7 percent shooting from the college 3-point line are good places to start.
