Pelicans trade No. 52 pick Edmond Sumner to Pacers
With the 52nd pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, the New Orleans Pelicans selected Xavier point guard Edmond Sumner and traded him to the Indiana Pacers.
The 21-year-old is coming off a solid campaign as a redshirt sophomore, averaging 15 points, five assists, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.3 steals on 47.9 percent shooting for the Musketeers. After performing well earlier in the year, Sumner's season was cut short after he suffered a torn ACL in late January.
At 6-foot-5 with a 6-foot-8 wingspan, he's the ideal size at the point, while his speed and explosiveness make him one of the most intriguing guards in the draft. Sumner is at his best when he attacks the basket, using his quickness and touch around the rim to finish effectively inside.
While he developed into an efficient scorer at Xavier, he's far from a great shooter, and will need to improve his stroke at the next level to become a truly dangerous threat on offense. He has the potential on the defensive end with his size and length, but wasn't the most reliable defender in college.
