Bulls select Lauri Markkanen with No. 7 pick after trade with Timberwolves

With the seventh pick in Thursday's NBA draft, the Chicago Bulls selected Arizona big man Lauri Markkanen.

The Bulls reportedly acquired the pick in a trade that sent Jimmy Butler to the Minnesota Timberwolves earlier in the night.

There's tremendous value to be had in a legit 7-footer who can spread the floor with consistency from 3-point range like this Finnish baller. Markkanen made more 3-pointers than anyone of his stature in the NCAA since 2000 during his only year with the Wildcats. He has the tools to be a reliable spot-up shooter at the pro level, while also thriving with his back to the basket - although the former aspect of his game is certainly stronger than the latter.

Teams would no doubt like to see more shot-blocking ability from someone of his size, but with his subpar wingspan and a lack of explosiveness, that's going to be difficult for Markkanen to do until he starts working on his physique.

Even as is, this first-team all-Pac-12 member has a lot to offer right out of the gate. He just turned 20 years old, and can be molded into a capable defender over time once he becomes stronger. He has already demonstrated exceptional decision-making in that facet, as well, so once he comes into form, he'll be a threat on both ends.
