Watch: J.R. Smith, wife open up about prematurely born daughter
Cleveland Cavaliers guard J.R. Smith and his wife Shirley sat down with ESPN's Rachel Nichols for an emotional interview prior to Game 3 of the NBA Finals to talk about their daughter, Dakota, who was born five months premature in January.
Dakota weighed just one pound at birth and remained in the neonatal intensive care unit until May 23rd, when the couple was finally able to take her home.
"My wife needs me, my daughter needs me. Nothing is more important at this point in my life," a tearful Smith told Nichols. "When you see your child go through some ... like in most of my life, I've been able to be in control of everything, and something like that, you have no control. And it's your child and obviously I would do anything for her. It hurt."
