Report: McLemore to be UFA after Kings don't extend qualifying offer
Shooting guard Ben McLemore is set to enter unrestricted free agency after the Sacramento Kings declined to extend him a qualifying offer, sources told ESPN's Chris Haynes.
Extending the $4.2-million offer would've made McLemore a restricted free agent, and put the Kings in the driver's seat to retain him. It appears they have no intention of doing so.
Despite disappointing since being drafted seventh overall in 2013, the 24-year-old should carry some value on the open market. He's still young, and is coming off a season in which he shot a career-best 38.2 percent from 3-point range.
The rest of McLemore's game has largely failed to develop, but there remains a whiff of possibility that he can grow into the kind of wing defender his physical tools suggest he could be.
In four seasons with the Kings, McLemore averaged 9.4 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.2 assists, with a .417/.352/.780 shooting line and a 9.2 PER.
