Report: Knicks GM Steve Mills wants promotion to president

The New York Knicks have been linked to a handful of the league's brightest executives after Phil Jackson vacated the position of team president.

But the answer might be right under their nose: Knicks general manager Steve Mills is trying to sell team owner James Dolan on promoting him to president, sources told Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News.

The biggest advantage Mills wields is Dolan's trust. Mills is reportedly pitching him on a plan that would involve installing Mills as president, then hiring a general manager. The president would then serve as a buffer between the GM and Dolan.

Mills is currently overseeing the Knicks throughout free agency on an interim basis. He previously worked as Jackson's right-hand man in the franchise's day-to-day operations.

The Knicks have been linked to Toronto Raptors president Masai Ujiri and former Cleveland Cavaliers president David Griffin, among others, in their candidate search.
