Report: Knicks GM opposed to re-signing Derrick Rose

USA Today Sports

The man currently calling the shots for the New York Knicks has his vision for which direction the team should be heading, and that vision doesn't seem to include Derrick Rose.

Team general manager Steve Mills is reportedly opposed to the Knicks re-signing the former league Most Valuable Player, a source told The New York Daily News' Frank Isola.

Former president Phil Jackson - who mutually parted ways with the organization last week - seemed to be on board with keeping Rose around, as he was the one who traded for him in the first place.

Mills has reportedly been telling agents that he wants the Knicks to go young, and while Rose is only 28, his body has been through the meat grinder over the years, having missed 137 games over the last four seasons, as well as the entire 2012-13 campaign.

New York did, however, reach out to Rose after more and more free-agent point guards began committing to teams, perhaps fearing that with the market drying up so quickly, they should at least gauge interest.

Nonetheless, barring any noteworthy signings in the coming days and weeks, the point guard of the future in the Big Apple appears to be (at least for the moment) Frenchman Frank Ntilikina, who the Knicks selected eighth overall in last month's draft.

Rose earned $21.3 million last season for the 31-51 Knicks, and is currently an unrestricted free agent.
