Report: Raptors dump Carroll's contract, ship him to Nets with pair of picks
The Toronto Raptors have unloaded DeMarre Carroll's contract, trading him, along with a first-round and second-round pick in 2018, to the Brooklyn Nets, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
Center Justin Hamilton heads the other way in a deal that sees the Raptors shed the $30 million that the oft-injured Carroll was owed over the next two seasons.
The reported move gives Toronto, who recently handed out three-year contracts to both Kyle Lowry and Serge Ibaka, added salary cap flexibility. Norman Powell's impending status - he's slated to become a restricted free agent next summer - likely also helped facilitate the move. That said, offloading Carroll comes at a hefty price in the form of the two picks, even if Masai Ujiri and Co. figured to be selecting in the latter stages of next year's draft.
With a plethora of centers now on the roster - not including Ibaka - Wojnarowski adds the Raptors are, according to his sources, "still interested in becoming active in free agency this summer."
Carroll, meanwhile, gets the opportunity to reignite his career in Brooklyn, where he'll reunite with a familiar face:
The 30-year-old, who joined the Raptors in free agency amid much fanfare in 2015, was never able to replicate the success he found in Atlanta; slowed by injury, he played only 26 games in his first season.
He averaged 8.9 points and 3.8 rebounds last year.
