Report: Pelicans, Rondo agree to 1-year, $3.3M deal
The New Orleans Pelicans agreed to a one-year, $3.3-million contract with free-agent point guard Rajon Rondo, sources told The Vertical's Shams Charania.
This will be the third straight one-year deal for Rondo following stops in Sacramento and Chicago. He also received interest this summer from the Los Angeles Lakers and New York Knicks.
While spending on another point guard may seem counterintuitive for a team that lavished Jrue Holiday with a five-year, $126-million deal earlier this month, the Pelicans are intrigued by the possibility of playing Holiday and Rondo together, with Holiday shifting off the ball, ESPN's Zach Lowe and Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Thursday.
Rondo is also said to be close with Pelicans big man DeMarcus Cousins from their brief time playing together with the Kings.
The 31-year-old averaged 7.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, 6.7 assists, and 1.4 steals for the Bulls last season while shooting a career-best 37.6 percent from 3-point range.
He had two terrific games to open the postseason, helping lead Chicago to a 2-0 lead over the top-seeded Boston Celtics, but he missed the remainder of the series (four straight Bulls losses) after suffering a broken thumb.
