Thibodeau: Minnesota working with Wiggins on extension
Almost four years removed from being the first overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, Minnesota Timberwolves forward Andrew Wiggins is soon to have his rookie contract expire.
When it does at the conclusion of the upcoming season, the Kansas product will be in line for a massive pay raise. According to Minnesota head coach Tom Thibodeau, it's an increase Wiggins and the organization are already discussing.
"We're working on it right now," said Thibadeou, per Jerry Zgoda of the Star Tribune.
While Thibodeau didn't divulge any further information, it seems likely Minnesota will write the biggest check possible in order to retain Wiggins.
Now armed with Jimmy Butler, Jamal Crawford, and Jeff Teague, re-signing Wiggins would help the team keep pace in a loaded Western Conference both now and for the extended future.
Though improving aspects of his game outside of scoring remains a must, offering a max contract to Wiggins would give him immense financial incentive to spend his upcoming prime exclusively with Minnesota.
Assuming Wiggins stays, the organization can then focus its attention on star center Karl-Anthony Towns. The 21-year-old is already a dominant force in the league and is a major part of the team's core. When his rookie contract expires in 2019-20, expect a maximum contract offer to come his way, as well.
