'Fire GarPax': Bulls fans put up billboard criticizing front office
Chicago Bulls fans have had enough.
Supporters of the team put up a crowdfunded billboard Wednesday in the Windy City that indicates they're "no longer seeing red" and would like to see a change in direction, specifically calling for the organization to fire general manager Gar Forman and VP of basketball operations John Paxson.
The GoFundMe campaign stemmed from a Reddit thread in which many Chicago fans expressed disapproval of the club trading away its best player in Jimmy Butler for pennies on the dollar. The penny-pinching Bulls continued to incite the wrath of their faithful on draft day when they essentially sold a pick to the Golden State Warriors.
"That was the final straw," campaign-starter Brendon Henderson told the Chicago Sun-Times' Madeline Kenney. "I decided to do something about it."
The Bulls finished the season at .500, squeezing into the playoffs where they were eliminated in the opening round. Though their decision to ship off Butler for younger players signals a rebuild, they will be paying Dwyane Wade almost $24 million in 2017-18 when he's 36 years old. Long gone are the dynasty days, and there's no indication of if or when the team will be relevant again, so many fans are calling for change at the top.
"If I had something to say to the Bulls' front office, I'd say it's an absolute ignominy for front office to have little to no progress," Henderson said. "Whether they have a change within themselves or there's a personnel change within the front office, something has to be done."
The campaign surpassed its initial goal of $2,000 within the first day and altogether raised north of $8,300 from fans all over the world. Henderson said he's going to use the extra funds collected for more billboards, including one that will be propped up near United Center for next season's home opener. Any excess money following the endeavor will be donated to the Boys and Girls Club of Chicago.
