Report: Butler, Towns pushing for Irving to join Timberwolves
The Minnesota Timberwolves overhauled their roster this offseason, adding forward Jimmy Butler, veteran scorer Jamal Crawford, and point guard Jeff Teague.
But despite those additions and Teague's presence at the point, it seems a certain Minnesota duo believes there is room for improvement, with the desired target being disgruntled Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Kyrie Irving.
The newly acquired Butler and center Karl-Anthony Towns have reportedly "been doing their part to recruit Irving" and have made it known to management that they want to add him to the mix, sources told ESPN's Brian Windhorst.
While it's difficult to imagine such a trade, it's not entirely without context, as familiarity between Butler, Towns, and Irving runs deep.
Irving and Butler became close friends while playing for USA Basketball, and the fathers of Towns and Irving have a relationship extending back to "the basketball scene in northern New Jersey," per Windhorst's report.
While adding Irving to Minnesota's renovated roster would make the T-wolves incredibly dangerous, there are two main obstacles to overcome.
Firstly, Teague and Irving would more than likely have to swap jerseys for the deal to work, as their respective need to run the point simply wouldn't fit together in any backcourt.
Secondly, per league rules, any potential trade isn't possible until Dec. 15 due to Teague signing on with Minnesota as a free agent.
Whether fans could fathom another massive move from Minnesota, the December timeline gives the two teams plenty of time to hash out the logistics.
