Report: Rose tried to sign with Spurs, Clippers to no avail
It hurts when admiration isn't mutual. Derrick Rose found that out the hard way this offseason.
Rose reportedly approached some of the best teams in the Western Conference in hopes of garnering a contract for the upcoming season, but both the San Antonio Spurs and Los Angeles Clippers passed on signing the 2011 MVP, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
With a tepid market for his services, the 28-year-old had hoped to land a one-year deal with a winning franchise in order to rebuild his stock ahead of next summer. Apparently, neither the Spurs or Clippers were inclined to give Rose a shot.
The Spurs were included among Kyrie Irving's reported teams of interest, but are currently set to start the season with Patty Mills and Dejounte Murray holding down point guard duties while Tony Parker works his way back from a ruptured quadriceps injury. The Clippers acquired a pair of point guards in Patrick Beverley and Lou Williams as part of the Chris Paul trade, and signed Euroleague star Milos Teodosic to fill out the point guard rotation.
After starting his career with his hometown Chicago Bulls, Rose spent an up-and-down season with the New York Knicks in 2016-17 before hitting unrestricted free agency. He ultimately signed a one-year, $2.1-million contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers, the polar opposite of the maximum contract he had reportedly hoped for as recently as January this year.
