Wiggins expects big things from Wolves' D with Butler in the mix
Ahead of his fourth pro season, 2014 No. 1 pick Andrew Wiggins is looking forward to the Timberwolves' potential, especially with new teammate Jimmy Butler beside him on the wing.
Wiggins told The Crossover's Ben Golliver the duo will "complement each other's game and make each other better."
Prior to last season, Butler was named to three straight All-Defensive second teams as a member of the Bulls. The first two of those award-winning seasons came with defensive-minded Timberwolves coach Tom Thibodeau patrolling Chicago's sidelines.
"We have great pieces, we added great pieces, and we have a great coaching staff," Wiggins said. "I think this year is the year."
In addition to Butler, free-agent point guard Jeff Teague was added to the mix, joining holdover starters Wiggins, power forward Gorgui Dieng, and 2016 Rookie of the Year Karl-Anthony Towns. Given Thibodeau's track record, there's plenty of reason to think the Wolves could boast one of the league's top defenses.
"Everyone can play defense," Wiggins added. "If you're athletic and you can run, you can play defense. It's a mindset. I think we were just a young team last year. We took breaks. We had good games where we played great defense and we had other games where we didn't know what was happening."
