Gerald Henderson to have hip surgery, could reportedly miss 2017-18 season

Unrestricted free-agent guard Gerald Henderson will undergo hip surgery, which could force him to miss the entire 2017-18 season, league sources told ESPN's Chris Haynes.

Henderson is hopeful that he could be available at the end of the campaign, but that will depend on his recovery. Nonetheless, he reportedly expects to be fully healthy for the following season.

"Despite receiving genuine interest from several NBA teams, I have made the decision to continue to evaluate surgical options on my left hip," Henderson said in an official statement through his agency. "I have been playing through severe pain that has made it difficult to play to the best of my ability. Now the pain has started to impact my everyday life off the court.

"My family, my agent, and I are working closely with my medical team to give me all of the information I will need to make the best decision, personally and professionally. I am as competitive as they come and want to play. I will fully commit to myself to get healthy. I am thankful for the many opportunities I've had and I look forward to returning to playing in the NBA."

The Milwaukee Bucks, Golden State Warriors, and Toronto Raptors all had interest in signing Henderson, per Haynes.

The eight-year veteran was waived by the Philadelphia 76ers on June 30, saving the team $8 million in owed salary in the process. He started 41 of his 72 outings with the organization, averaging 9.2 points on 42.3 percent shooting, along with 2.6 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 0.6 steals in 23.2 minutes per game.
