Knicks president: 'Plan' is for Carmelo to be at Monday's Media Day
Though it hasn't been smooth sailing in the Big Apple in recent years, the New York Knicks seem to be set on keeping Melo.
At a press conference Friday, Knicks president Steve Mills said the team expects disgruntled star Carmelo Anthony to be with the team Monday for Media Day and the start of training camp Tuesday.
Reports began to leak this week that Anthony's camp was hopeful of a trade before Media Day, avoiding the awkwardness stemming from Anthony's not-so-secret desire to join the Houston Rockets.
As Anthony's remaining two-year, $54.2-million contract features a no-trade clause, the Knicks have been unable to attract the sort of offers worthy of parting with a 10-time All-Star and bona fide box-office draw. Anthony has reportedly indicated he would only waive his no-trade clause to move to the Rockets, who would likely have to offer expensive - but unspectacular - big man Ryan Anderson to make the salaries match.
The Portland Trail Blazers briefly emerged as a dark horse contender for Anthony, but though they reportedly "piqued" his interest, there's been no firm indication Anthony would waive his no-trade clause to join up with Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum in the Pacific northwest.
The Knicks buying out the remainder of Anthony's contract, allowing him to sign anywhere as a free agent, is reportedly not an option.
Anthony has averaged 24.7 points, seven rebounds, and 3.2 assists in six-and-a-half seasons with the Knicks, though hasn't elevated his squad to the postseason since the 2012-13 season.
