Curry scoffs at Durant's UA diss: 'Can't tell me nobody wants to wear our shoes'

If anything will ever befall the Golden State Warriors, it will be the petty beefs between the stars.

Kevin Durant, one of Nike's most prominent basketball clients, made headlines when he said "Nobody wants to play in Under Armours" on a recent episode of The Bill Simmons Podcast.

The diss was an issue because his teammate Stephen Curry is the poster athlete for the Maryland-based apparel brand. Curry responded two weeks later in an interview with Scott Fowler of the Charlotte Observer.

"I told him that he has a certain opinion based on his experience growing up in the Nike business," Curry said of Durant. "What that means when it comes to the competition among shoe brands and universities and the whole grassroots system and whatnot - he's entitled to that opinion obviously. ...

"But when it comes to what I'm trying to do with Under Armour, and what the Curry brand means and what Under Armour basketball means, that statement does not ring true at all.

"Where we were four years ago, and where we are now - you can't tell me nobody wants to wear our shoes. I know for a fact that they do."

Durant took an unnecessary dig at Under Armour while speaking to a larger point about how sneaker companies influence collegiate and high school athletes. He said that aside from those attending school in Maryland, the top players in the country are wearing Nike.

"Shoe companies have a real, real big influence on where these kids go," Durant said. "So, nobody wants to play in Under Armours, I'm sorry. Like, the top kids don't because they all play Nike."

He also added, "everybody knows that, but nobody wants to say nothing," when it came to Nike's place relative to Under Armour.

Curry wasn't pleased with Durant's comments, but the two-time MVP ultimately left it at this: He and Durant both respect one another for the work they're doing, and that this small dig wouldn't become a sticking point for the team.

"It’s nothing that's going to break up the locker room," Curry said.
