Schroder resolves to learn from arrest: 'Everybody makes mistakes'

Dennis Schroder is ready to move on from his mistake.

The Atlanta Hawks point guard spoke publicly for the first time since he was arrested on charges of misdemeanor battery.

"I've been here four years," he said, as quoted by Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Michael Cunningham. "Came here at 19 and I think (showed) improvement every year. I just try to get better every day and try to learn. I think we are all human beings. Everybody makes mistakes. I try to learn from it and keep earning my teammate's trust."

The 24-year-old German was arrested Friday for "initiating contact" with a man in a parking lot, and was later released on bail. Three others who struck the victim were also taken into police custody.

Head coach Mike Budenholzer wasn't pleased to find out about the incident, but does believe some good can come from it.

"Certainly we don't want any of our players or Dennis to be put in this kind of position, and I think he understands that," Budenholzer said Sunday. "I think it's an opportunity for him to learn. He is going to continue to grow. He has the ability to become a leader on our team.

"He has to earn everybody's trust, everybody's respect. That's what comes with leadership, or that's how you become a leader. But it's part of his growth, it's part of the process. We are disappointed that anyone would be in that position."

Schroder played in Sunday's preseason opener against the Miami Heat, racking up 12 points, five assists, and four rebounds in the 96-90 loss.
